Seven Things You May Not Know About Your Own Cat

Longevity - As the saying goes, multiply a cat's age by three to determine how old he is in comparison to humans. Not so. At one year old, a cat is entirely capable of caring for itself and is also capable of reproducing. A human being aged three is helpless. These mathematical calculations for determining an animal's "actual" age are ineffective because of the differences in internal and external development between animals and humans.

However, did you know that cats' life expectancies appear to be rising, from roughly twelve years or so a few decades ago to eighteen or more, and it appears that cats are now commonly living into their twenties? In addition to advancements in cat medicine, it appears that genetic alterations are also extending life expectancy, and some cats do fact live to very old ages. In Southern California, a few cats have reportedly lived for thirty to forty years.

Independent & Loners - Many people believe cats to be solitary animals, however anyone who has been to a farm where cats live will notice that they assemble in colonies, often numbering up to twenty, and appear to even hunt together. Since all the cats are equal and there is always one dominant cat, there isn't much fighting. Until a new cat comes along and authority needs to be reestablished, at least.

If, like me, you have an indoor/outdoor cat, you will undoubtedly find him begging to be let out despite having cat doors. Every day, usually at night, mine does. Despite the fact that both doors have cat doors, he dashes into the mudroom as soon as I open the one closest to me. If I really accompany him outside onto the patio, he appears happy and rolls around on the stones while observing me. He probably would adore a hunting buddy. (Ideally, I anticipate, one that is a little bit stealthier and quieter than myself.)

Cats can't be trained - We have probably all seen on television performance cats trained to walk a rope, roll a ball, and even swim underwater. Training is quite doable. We think our own cats are not trainable and relate this to some sort of show industry. They may all be trainable to some extent depending on the breed and particular cat, and they can definitely teach humans!

Ms. Moyes mentions the games of fetch and carry and hide and seek that she plays with her cats. In the first, the cat returns the person's throw of tinfoil (or whatever) and drops it at their feet. She claims that her cat invented the second. The cat will bring the tinfoil ball, drop it, and then exit the room. After hiding it, Ms. Moyes will call her cat, who will start eagerly searching through all the hiding locations, discover it, drop it, and then leave the room once more. Remember that Ms. Moyes fosters and sustains an extraordinarily close-knit and respectful relationship with her cats. The more you expect your pet (or child) to be capable, the more likely it is that they will become, as many pet owners, in fact, parents, have found.

A less dramatic but still useful example comes from my own cat. A stray who was taken in at around 8 months old, he first raised some concern because of his propensity to "do his nails" on the furniture. He would stop when I would stamp my foot on the ground and tell him no. Now I simply tell him to stop in no uncertain terms, and he complies. He only acts in this manner when I'm not paying attention and he wants something.

A cat will actually do something that he knows is wrong to gain your attention and let you know that he needs something. For instance, my cat is aware that he is not permitted on the kitchen table, but if his food bowl is left unattended for too long, he will jump onto it, letting me know that he needs to be fed.

An ancient Egyptian papyrus from the twentieth dynasty depicts a dog herding goats while standing on his hind legs and carrying a staff. A cat is shown in the same image leading ducks while standing on his hind legs and carrying a staff. The dog and cat are shown in the picture standing on their hind legs and holding staffs, probably to show that they are in charge. They couldn't hold a staff if they were depicted on all fours, and if they were, they would appear to be on an equal footing with the goats and ducks, not in charge of them. Before the dark days of cat eradication, I venture to believe that cats were once trained and employed, and I expect that they were highly receptive to the situation.

Aloof - It is understandable why the cat maintains his distance when one knows the awful history the cat family has undergone at the hands of man, periodically throughout Europe and even in America. Cats have historically been betrayed, condemned, tormented, and even wiped out in the thousands and tens of thousands due to their association with witches, Satan, and evil. The DNA and survival instinct to be afraid of man were passed on to offspring by those who survived the pogroms. However, every cat owner is aware of how genuinely devoted cats can get and how appreciative they may be of the love and attention they receive.

Music & Cats A dog is likely to leave the room if you start playing an instrument, even if it's something soft like folk music on a guitar. A cat, on the other hand, is more likely to approach you, lie by you, roll about, and purr while appearing to adore the sounds. I used to have the biggest fan, especially of my very intricate finger picking.

My present cat enjoys listening to the guitar, but when I pick up the Celtic Harp and play on its strings, the clear deep enjoyment he feels is incomparable. I can only characterise his state as ecstatic; he seems to be overcome with nearly unbearable pleasure with each tiny individual sound. The same tale is told by numerous songwriters throughout history.

Mlle Dubuy, a well-known harpist, observed that her cat would purr cheerfully when she performed a piece on her harp well, but would cry when she played less well. She enhanced her ability by using this phenomenon. She left her discriminating cat a sizable legacy and endowed devoted friends similarly since she understood how much her success as a harpist was due to him.

On YouTube, there is a video of a cat playing the piano. She is completely engrossed in the phenomenon and is purposely playing the notes. The cat pauses and stops listening, clearly appreciative, as his lady plays Bach on another piano. It almost seems as though this cat, like all cats, genuinely appreciate good music, and the cat in this YouTube video even seems to have musical aspirations.

Movement - Due to a number of causes, cats are known to be nimble and adaptable. The vertebrae of the spinal column are joined by muscle in cats as opposed to ligaments in humans, providing cats a wider range of motion. He can turn his foreleg practically in any direction due to the design of his shoulder joint.

However, have you ever noticed—probably unconsciously—that there is something amusing or peculiar about the way cats run?

The cat moves the front and back legs of the same side, in contrast to nearly all other animals, which move the front leg of one side of the body and the back leg of the opposite. In other words, front, left, let's say, a brief pause, back left, right, front, pause, and right. Only the camel and the giraffe, both of whom have amusing gaits, are other creatures known to do this.

Food, water, and health - Dry food is quite plenty for cats to eat. Many authorities claim that this questionable claim is flat-out incorrect. Cats require meat. They lack the biological aptitude that humans and dogs do to put together the necessary proteins by ingesting different components from a variety of non-meat diets. Furthermore, a large portion of the ingredients in dry food, namely the carbohydrates, are thought to be completely superfluous as well as potentially dangerous for cats. Cats need meat in some form, typically canned food, not only for the proteins but also for the water.

Every cat owner can undoubtedly attest that cats don't have a great urge to drink. Their principal source of water is their usual prey. Dehydration can quickly lead to kidney damage in cats if they are denied that and aren't given enough wet food.

Fresh water should always be accessible to your cat, regardless of whether she consumes wet, dry, or both types of food. The fact that cats are more inclined to drink if their water bowl is not next to their food bowl makes sense because in the wild, animals seek out water independently of food. This observation has been made by many cat owners. Additionally, even though they are clean animals, having food and food smells close to their water supply may not 'feel' as hygienic.

Plastic dishes for meals and beverages should be avoided as well. Plastic is prone to scratches, and dangerous bacteria can flourish in small nicks and scratches. Additionally, using plastic dishes for food and water might cause skin issues on cats who are allergic to plastic.

Still water may run deep - but it still doesn't suit a cat. Almost every cat owner has noticed that their cats love to put their tongues under the tap or even raise their mouths to falling rain. My cat used to put his head under a drip in the bathtub and let the water run to his tongue until we had it fixed - the tub, that is. Many cats will drink from any form of water other than still water.

Some individuals, including some veterinarians, believe that moving water differs at the molecular level. Some people believe it to be the sound, the sight, or the sound of the water moving. Cats enjoy moving water for whatever reason (and given how broad a topic this is if internet discussions are any indication, it is quite surprising that the reasons behind this are not better known).
